I apologize for the size of this file and its download time. Most of it is due to the fantastic startup screen for system 7.5.1 (it looks best in thousands of colors aka 16-bit depth.) The Applescripts also take a little bit of space but are required for you lazy souls and those others who couldn’t manage my earlier work.
This collection is a replacement to my previous “Virtual Copland Hack” file. It includes over 100 Copland icons that I have made over the last few months, a group of patchers to do all the System file work for you (yes, you no longer have to go sifting around your Macintosh with ResEdit. The patchers do it all for you), and a bunch of Applescripts that will basically do all the tedious work for you (these scripts are not a necessity; they only make your life easier!) All you need to do is follow a short and simple set of instructions, and you will be given a “Virtual Copland” MacOS (operating system.)
What do these patches do?
They replace your old and boring icons with icons that resemble the new 3D icons as seen in Copland previews. These patches do not improve nor diminish your Mac performance in any way. They simply give your Macintosh a brand new look by changing a few icons and pictures to be more entertaining and resemble the upcoming Copland release of the MacOS.
I made the patches non-replacement ones, meaning they create a new copy of your files instead of replacing the original ones. This simply prevents people from failing to leave themselves a backup should something not work correctly. This is one of those thoughtful safety things I pride myself on that.
What is this darn Copland thing I keep hearing about?
Well, if you downloaded this file without knowing what Copland is, I am incredibly surprised. Copland is the code name for the new Macintosh OS (System 8.) It will bring a whole new look and feel to the way your Macintosh works and operates.
If you would like to learn more about Copland...
There is lots of information online about Copland and is all readily available for your browsing:
America Online:
Macworld Online & Mac Home Journal both have their individual tidbits on Copland. MacWorld also has a large number of Copland files (like this one!) AOL also has many other Copland articles flying around, but these are the places I would recommend.
eWorld:
Macworld Online, ZiffNet Mac, MacUser Online, and MacWeek are my recommendations. eWorld has less Copland software because of their stricter “community standards” This file is there, but without the 100+ fabulous folder icons to round out your Virtual Copland experience.
CompuServe:
MacUser, MacWeek and ZiffNet Mac should also have Copland stuff. I don’t know about software and other places because I have not been on Compuserve in a long time. (I’m sure that some jerk(s) have posted my previous files there by now. It doesn’t matter because I may be on CompuServe soon.)
There are probably many more places to find info about Copland (like Prodigy and Delphi plus numerous Internet sites and other places as well.) These are just my recommendations!
How do I run these patches?
Ok, this is the really simple part. If you have AppleScript (a standard part of System 7.5x), you’re in luck because all the work is basically done for you. All you have to do is click the mouse a couple of times (run the scripts in order), restart your Mac, compress your original files for backup and click the mouse a few more times (there are more detailed instructions provided in the scripts themselves.) There are more instructions inside each folder. System 7.5 or 7.5.2 users need the 7.5.x folder while 7.5.1 and 7.1.x users should use the one labeled with their system version! You will find further info and instructions inside!
The Virtual Copland Patch was created by Erik Selke (selkeeri@pilot.msu.edu) with great amounts of help and encouragement from Mark Siple. The 7.5.1 Startup Screen was created by Erik Selke using the regular Mac OS picture and another picture by an unknown photographer. All the Applescripts were written and perfected by Erik Selke. All the icons in this file (including those patched in) were created by Erik Selke using inspiration and pictures from MacWorld magazine. Some Copland icons were made from icons given to me by numerous helpers. The Aaron patch was created by Erik Selke.
I would like to thank my beta testers (you know who you are!) and Mark Siple (again) for help and encouragement.
